Give thanks to the Lord
“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good. His love endures forever. Give thanks to the God of Gods. His love endures forever. Give thanks to the Lord of Lords: His love endures forever” (Ps. 136:1-3).
David is praising God here. We too should praise God in our daily life knowing that He is good all the time, He is Lord of Lords, King of kings, God of Gods and His love endures forever and ever. His love is eternal.
Giving thanks means simply telling God, Thank You. Thank Him for each and everything that He has done in our lives each day i.e. for blessings, good health, good job, good family, good shelter, good church fellowship, good qualifications, salvation, freedom, protection, daily provision etc. Our whole life is not enough to thank Him for what He has done in our lives. But the sad thing is that sometimes we are so mischievous that we forget God’s blessings and we won’t give Him praise. We see here a man who, while being the king over Israel, was always in the presence of the Lord and dedicated much of his life to God in praising Him with songs and playing in the hap in His sanctuary. He was not a Pastor or a Priest. Even then he loved the Lord so much and he was always praising Him. He wrote many psalms and most of the psalms were about praising God and giving thanks to Him.
He wrote in Psalm 103:2 “Bless the Lord! O my soul and forget not all His benefits”. It was almost as if he totally lost himself, his spirit, soul, mind in God’s love. The Bible teaches us that it is good to give thanks to God.
How do we do that? Why should we give thanks? – In Ps. 92:1-5, Lev. 22:29, Chro. 23:30 says , Giving thanks was an important part of the Israelite culture. Every morning and evening, the Levites made an offering to the Lord in order to keep the people’s focus on their true Provider, God. We should also give thanks in the morning and evening for two things : that we are alive and also that we are saved.
Why does God say it is good to give thanks? – Phl.4: 6-7 says that because it honours Him, it re-focuses our attention and it releases us from anxiety.
How do we express our thanks giving to God? – By simply saying “Thank You” By singing, by living a godly life, by praising Him in public and by giving generously.
Jesus thanked God the Father many times. He thanked God for the loaves and fishes and for Lazarus’ resurrection.
We too have experienced many blessings in our lives. Let us praise Him and thank Him through worship, by proclaiming to the world that He is the same yesterday, today and forever as it says in Heb. 13: 8.
In accepting salvation through Jesus as our personal Lord and Saviour, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving and praise, which is the fruit of our lips that confess His name. So let us give thanks to the Maker of heaven continuously in our day-to-day life.
